Having a self-care spa day at home isn’t a luxury. It’s a great way to look after your well-being in the privacy of your own home.  Spa days are wonderful for relaxation, rejuvenation, and pampering. But let’s face it, it can be pricey to book a day at your local day spa. Like, really pricey. And if it’s within your means, go for it! But for a lot of us older women, either we can’t afford that, or we don’t feel we deserve to spend the money on it. (If that’s the case, please jump over to my post on Confidence and Self-Esteem right now! Then come back, of course.  😉 )

Here are some ideas to create your own at-home spa day:

Note: I only recommend products I would use myself. If you purchase items through the links on my site, I might earn a small commission from the retailer. This is at no cost to you and does not increase your price for the item. Money earned from these commissions helps keep The Middle Girls running! Thank you for your support!

What is a Spa Day?

A spa day at home is just what it sounds like: Taking all the best qualities of a fancy spa and recreating them right there in your own bathroom. No, you don’t need to be an aesthetician to do it, either. And you can pick and choose the best “services” to provide for yourself, based on what works for you.

A spa day at home helps you relax and feel cherished by you. (Who is actually the most important person that should cherish you!) It can help build self-esteem and calm anxiety. Pampering yourself with an at-home spa day can remind you how important you are. Also, your skin and hair will love you for it! I am including links to some of my fav products that I use for spa day relax time! (Just look for the blue links to see my favorites!) Oh, and I have an at-home spa day checklist for you at the bottom to pull it all together!

Spa Day at Home Ideas

Set the Mood:

  • First, choose your calming space. For most of us, we will probably choose our bathroom. But if your bathroom is small or uninspiring, your bedroom is fine too! (Just lock the door for ultimate privacy!) If you are using your bed to relax and do treatments on, first make it so it feels comfortable and special. Then throw another washable blanket over it so you won’t get it covered in lotions and conditioners. Prop up pillows for you to lean against. Set up your nightstand or a small table to hold products, drinks and snacks, etc…
  • If you are using your bathroom, bring in a comfortable chair to sit on. Throw a soft towel over it to make you feel comfortable and relaxed, and to protect it. If you are lucky enough to have a tub, make sure it is clean and you have several fluffy towels fresh from the dryer folded up next to it.
  • Create a calming atmosphere by dimming the lights, lighting scented candles, and playing soothing music. Try to have as many candles as possible for that luxury vibe. Prep the space as if you owned a day spa and you were preparing it for a client. Use essential oils in a diffuser or add a few drops to a warm bath for aromatherapy benefits. I love lavender, tangerine, gardenia, ylang-ylang, or jasmine.

  • Now create yourself a healthy snack tray, maybe with fresh fruit on a glass plate, some almonds in a little bowl, and a few pieces of dark chocolate as well. Fill a pitcher full of your favorite drink… It can be anything from lemon water with ice, to a pretty sangria…Dealers choice. Use the prettiest kitchenware you have. Fancy wine glasses for whatever you’re drinking. Remember, this is about pampering yourself.
  • Last prep step: Cozy up in your robe and slippers, tell any other house members if they knock on the door in the next hour or two, they will pay dearly, and lock that door.

Relaxing Bath or Shower:

  • If you don’t have a tub, take a warm, cleansing shower before you get started to relax those muscles, soften your skin, and allow your hair follicles to be open for deep conditioning. If you have a tub, you may want to do all but the last step in it. Or at least some of them. For me, an hour is my limit in the bath, no matter how much I adore them. I don’t need more wrinkles, albeit temporarily! 🤪
  • Fill your bathtub with warm water and add bath salts, bubble bath, or bath oils for a luxurious soak. I like to use scented herbal Epsom salts. My fav is Dr. Teals. I love lavender, chamomile, and pink Himalayan salt.

  • If your product doesn’t have a scent, level up the experience with a few drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil for relaxation.
  • Consider adding flower petals or fresh herbs for an extra touch of indulgence.

Now, before you get into that bath…

Skin Care Routine:

Hair Care Treatment:

  • Apply a nourishing hair mask or treatment to revive dry or damaged hair.
  • Massage the treatment into your scalp and hair, then wrap your hair in a warm towel or shower cap to enhance absorption. Leave on until the end.

Time to jump in the tub! If you don’t have a tub, relax on your chair with your feet up if possible, or lounge on your bed against comfortable pillows.

Body Massage:

  • Treat yourself to a self-massage using a massage oil or lotion. If you are in the tub, your wet skin may be enough to allow you a good, deep massage.
  • Focus on your hands, feet, shoulders, and neck on areas of tension and tightness, using gentle pressure and circular motions to promote relaxation and relieve stress. When you have gotten through all the knots, then lightly stroke your arms and legs to help them relax as well.

Hydration and Refreshments:

  • Stay hydrated throughout your spa day by sipping on infused water, herbal tea, or a refreshing smoothie. Or yes, that Sangria. Let’s forget the hard alcohol for today though, you don’t want to dehydrate yourself.
  • Treat yourself to those healthy snacks to nourish your body from the inside out.

Mindfulness and Relaxation:

  • Take time to practice mindfulness exercises such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to quiet the mind and promote inner peace. You can do this in the bath while soft music is playing (I love Helen Jane Long) or while lounging.
  • Want a quick primer on a simple mediation? Here ya go…Quick 5 Minute Meditation Instructions.
  • Rest and relax as long as you want to.

Now take a quick shower to clean off any face mask or deep hair conditioner. Slather yourself with a luxe-scented lotion to lock in moisture. Apply a nice, rich facial moisturizer and eye cream too. Wrap yourself in a towel or robe and find a comfy spot to sit with good light.

Manicure and Pedicure:

  • Treat your hands and feet to a DIY manicure and pedicure. This doesn’t have to be about polish if that’s not your thing, though you can add it if you wish.
  • Just trim and shape your nails, push back cuticles, and apply a moisturizing hand and foot cream. Give those feet one last massage as you are adding the lotion.

Now, you are rested, relaxed, and best of all, pampered. Just like you deserve. And who knows? Next time, you might even want to invite a friend…😉
