Let’s start with those dark under-eye circles many of us get as we age. I am one of those women who was born with natural under-eye bags. Some women have perfectly smooth skin all the way to their eyeballs, and some of us, don’t. And of course, as I’ve aged they have become more pronounced, darker, and more of a pain in my butt.
It is important for mature skin that you don’t choose an under-eye concealer that grabs onto that delicate area. This will just make your under-eye look heavy and cakey, and bring even more attention to the bags. The best under-eye concealer for mature skin is one that strikes a balance… It needs to offer decent coverage, be moisturizing enough to not cause cakiness, but also not slide away with the day. Asking a lot? I think I found a few! And stick around, because I share my step-by-step tutorial on how to conceal under-eye bags and circles below!
Luminous Eye Corrector SPF 41 – Fair is my top pick for the best under-eye concealer for mature skin. It has one thing you never see in a concealer… SPF. We never think about protecting the skin around our eyes that way, because in the past, sunscreen was too harsh for the eye area. But now they have found ways to use mineral sunscreens around the eye that don’t sting! And if we all had been protecting our eyes from UV light all these years? Well, it’s never too late.
This concealer also covers dark circles well, reflects light, and treats the skin around the eye with peptides. And might I mention, without any cakiness or creasing, which I love! The dark circles aren’t just covered, they are color-corrected with this product. The metal applicator is supposed to help soothe puffiness, but honestly, I think that’s more of a marketing ploy. Ok, It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye is one of the best under-eye concealers for a couple of reasons. First, it’s full coverage but dries a natural finish. Second, it is waterproof and hydrating with Hyaluronic Acid and peptides. Third, it lasts forever! Seriously a little goes a very, very long way! So it’s an excellent value. After applying, I always take a little beauty sponge and dab off any extra, and that’s all it takes for a creaseless concealer that lasts all day!
Multi-Use Perfecting Concealer is great stuff. It’s the one I return to again and again when I want a natural look, but still want those dark circles to fade away. It doesn’t crease, and you can layer it for more coverage without it getting cakey. I use it as an under-eye concealer and also as a general concealer as well. It is air-light on your skin, nothing heavy. But unlike most concealers that are “lightweight,” this one has enough pigment to make it a good product. I’ve reordered it a least half a dozen times.
Best Concealer for Dry Skin
I have always had oily skin. My whole life. Then, menopause happened. And while I wouldn’t call my skin dry, it definitely leans in that direction. I’m guessing, so does yours. So if you are looking for a concealer that won’t make you look all caked up, this is the best concealer for dry skin I have found.
Stretch Concealer is a great concealer for dry skin. (The name is weird though, I don’t get it! 🤣) It is moisturizing, dewy, and radiant in its finish. It never cakes and never exaggerates wrinkles. However, same deal as with other hydration concealers…when using it, let it set a minute and then dab off any extra with a beauty sponge. Creaseless!
Best Color Correcting Concealer for Redness
Another thing that aging blesses us with is redness. It can be caused by broken capillaries, thinning skin, or even rosacea. Covering it sometimes isn’t enough. So here are my picks for concealers for mature skin that can actually color-correct correct too!
The e.l.f. line of cosmetics is a great drugstore brand. Inexpensive, effective, and cruelty-free. They also have some innovative products, like the e.l.f. Camo color corrector in green. Green helps to balance redness in your skin, so I use it for the areas where I have more capillaries, like my chin and around my nose. The green color is then covered up by your foundation or CC cream, and it really isn’t that strong a color anyway. Just enough to color-correct the redness in your skin. Good choice for a drugstore option.
You wouldn’t think a sunscreen would be the best concealer for mature skin. But this stuff is an awesome mineral sunscreen for dry skin, and it’s a color corrector! My sister turned me on to this (Thanks Rebecca!) So I use it all over my face when I’m going to the pool or the beach. The green dissipates as soon as you rub it in, but it neutralizes your redness and protects your skin. Just check out the thousands of five-star reviews! It’s great for drier skin too, as it’s nice and hydrating. Once you color correct for the redness, you might not even want foundation after that!
Best Concealer for Mature Skin- Oily
As mentioned before, I always had oily skin until menopause. But in the heat of the summer, or on a tropical beach somewhere, I can get oily all over again. So here are the two concealers I use when I am feeling a little shiny.
My number one fav makeup brand is Tarte. And their Shape Tape concealer has cult status. I mean, 24,000 great reviews??? But I do find it is best for oily skin as it does grab a little on dry skin. However, if you do run on the drier side, they now have a Shape Tape Creamy and it’s just as good! Both are buildable to full coverage and last and last for me. And you can use a lighter shade for under eyes, and a darker shade for contouring or concealing on the face. They have TONS of shades!

I had never even heard of this brand until I got it in my Ipsy box. (The best beauty subscription box around, IMO! I’ve been introduced to so much good stuff. Check it out here!) But Dose has super impressed me. Their concealer is full coverage but doesn’t grab, and I’ve even tried their foundation and loved it! It is packed with good-for-you skin ingredients too. It claims to be a matte finish, but I find if you’ve moisturized properly before, it is more a natural finish.
Best Drugstore Concealer for Older Women
For my money, e.l.f. products can often be just as good as high-end ones. While they have a 16-hour choice, I found the Hydrating Camo Concealer is the best for mature skin. It doesn’t grab or cake, and it gives you good, buildable coverage. Oh, and it’s $7. Can’t beat it!
How to Conceal Under Eye Bags and Dark Circles
Here is my quick routine on how to conceal under-eye bags and dark circles on mature skin.
- Moisturize your under-eye with a product that contains hyaluronic acid. It helps hold water in the skin and helps minimize the bags. It also allows concealer to go on without caking, which definitely accentuates bags! I like Il Makiage Power Lift Plumping Cream. I used this on my 80-year-old mother’s face, and her response was… “What did you do to the wrinkles?” (In a good way!) This is the number one step, to properly moisturize.
- Allow moisture to set and soak into the skin for 3-5 minutes.
- Now apply a small amount of concealer to your entire under-eye area. Make sure you use just a small amount. You can always layer on more, but if you start out with too much, you are going to see some creasing.
- Now here is the trick… Don’t rub the concealer in. Tap it in. Up and down taps with your finger help bond the concealer with the skin. And it gives you a more natural-looking finish. Try it!
- Let set for a minute or two, then use a beauty sponge to gently blot the area a time or two. This helps to remove any concealer that is just sitting on the surface of the skin. (Just waiting to crease on you later!) Let dry for 2-3 minutes.
- Finally, decide if you want to add another layer of coverage to your dark circles. Use a tiny amount of concealer on your finger, and pat just your dark circles until the concealer disappears into your skin. You don’t have to do the entire under-eye again. Repeat blotting with the beauty sponge.
